Earth Hour 2012

So, Earth Hour is almost upon us. It starts at 8:30pm (in your respective timezone) this evening. Thus, it has already begun in parts of the words, creating a wave of "lights out" traveling west. Surely, something to behold from space. (which I think they plan to do this year)

Anyway, wanted to write a little blog about this, because some people haven't heard of it. We all know of Earth Day. It's been around for quite awhile. I remember Earth Days, in my youth, when we got to do special projects in school, and the whole day was essentially recess. Can't beat that for a kid.. But generally speaking, Earth Day was all inclusive. There was no one, specific activity to do.

Earth Hour, though, is a bit different. It was created by the World Wildlife Fund (now the World Wide Fund for Nature, but will always be the former in my brain). The WWF has the goal "to halt and reverse the destruction of our environment." And they figured that something short, simple, and to the point.. would help to reach that goal.

Earth Hour, unlike Earth Day, just started in 2004, and only occurred in one city. It has since grown into a worldwide phenomenon. An idea, turned movement.

Why? Cause it's easy. You just turn your lights off for one hour. You can amp it up, if you want, by going free from all electricity.

Many cities are having gatherings/celebrations, as they'll be turning off electricity to major landmarks; such Big Ben. But the beauty is that you can do this, no matter where you are or who you are. There's no donation. There's no petition. Just you, joining in on the idea that we can all create major change, with one small gesture.
